Sarala Dasa (15th century CE), universally revered as Adikabi ("The First Poet"), is the foundational genius of Odia literature. Born as Siddheshwar Parida in Tentulipada village (Jagatsinghpur district, Odisha), he adopted the name Sarala Dasa out of deep devotion to Goddess Sarala of Jhankada, by whose divine grace he believed his creative powers were bestowed. Composing during the golden reign of Gajapati Kapilendra Deva, Sarala Dasa spearheaded a monumental cultural revolution by liberating Odia literature from the dominance of classical Sanskrit. He is immortalized for composing the Sarala Mahabharata, a massive vernacular retelling written in Dandi Vritta (a flexible, indigenous Odia rhythmic meter). Rather than merely translating Vyasa's original text, Sarala Dasa reimagined the epic through an authentically regional lens, weaving in Odisha's folk traditions, geography, social customs, and martial history. Beyond his monumental Mahabharata, Sarala Dasa authored other seminal Puranic masterworks, including Bilanka Ramayana and Chandi Purana. Through his linguistic mastery, populist storytelling, and elevation of the regional vernacular into a high literary medium, Adikabi Sarala Dasa laid the immortal cornerstone of Odia identity and literary tradition.
