Laxmikanta Mohapatra (1888–1953), revered universally as Kanta Kabi, was an iconic Odia poet, novelist, satirist, and freedom fighter. Born in Cuttack with ancestral roots in Bhadrak district, he holds an immortal place in regional heritage as the composer of Bande Utkala Janani (1912), the soul-stirring patriotic anthem officially recognised as the State Song of Odisha. Despite being afflicted with a severe, debilitating physical condition that left him bedridden for much of his adult life, Kanta Kabi maintained an indomitable spirit and a sharp, humorous intellect. In 1936, he established the legendary satirical periodical Dagaro, which served as a powerful vehicle for social critique, sharp political commentary, and literary innovation. His literary oeuvre spans deeply spiritual lyrics, trenchant parodies, and realistic prose.
