Jagannatha Dasa

Jagannatha Dasa (c. 1491–1550), reverently honored as Atibadi ("Greatest among the Great"), was a towering 15th–16th century Odia saint, poet, and scholar. He was a leading figure of the revered Panchasakha (Five Friends) spiritual movement and was bestowed his iconic honorific by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in recognition of his profound devotion and wisdom. His crowning contribution to Odia culture and literature is the Odia Bhagavata (or Srimad Bhagavata), composed in the nine-syllable Nabakshari meter. By translating the Sanskrit Bhagavata into clear, melodious Odia verse, he democratized spiritual philosophy and brought literary knowledge to every household across Odisha. This masterwork birthed the cultural institution of the Bhagavata Tungi—village community centers centered around reading his text. His other notable works include Artha Koili, Tula Bhina, Darubrahma Gita, and Sarkar Gita. Atibadi Jagannatha Dasa’s legacy remains the bedrock of Odia devotion, identity, and moral culture.
