Godabarish Mishra

Pandit Godabarish Mishra (1886–1956) was an eminent Odia poet, dramatist, novelist, educator, and freedom fighter. Born in Srinivaspur village (Puri district, Odisha), he was a vital pillar of the celebrated Satyabadi Panchasakha alongside Utkalamani Gopabandhu Das and Pandit Nilakantha Das. A dedicated teacher at the historic Satyabadi Bana Vidyalaya, Godabarish Mishra infused his literary creations with patriotic fervour and deep historical consciousness. He revitalised Odia historical drama with masterworks such as Purusottama Deva and Mukunda Deva, which rekindled regional pride and celebrated Odisha's glorious past. His narrative poems and ballads compiled in collections like Alekhika, Kalika, and Geetayan are celebrated for their emotional power, tragic heroism, and vivid folk storytelling. Beyond poetry and plays, he authored influential novels including 1817 (based on the Paika Rebellion) and Nirbasita. His candid and deeply insightful autobiography, Ardhasatabdira Orissa O Tanhire Mo Sthana ("Half a Century of Odisha and My Place In It"), was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1961. As a state legislator, Education Minister, and fearless journalist, Pandit Godabarish Mishra’s multi-faceted contributions remain an indispensable treasure of Odisha's cultural and political history.
