Dhananjaya Bhanja

Dhananjaya Bhanja (c. 1611–1701) was a distinguished 17th-century Odia poet and ruler of the Ghumusar kingdom in Odisha. A major pioneer of the Riti Yuga (Classical Era) in Odia literature, he laid the artistic and stylistic foundation for ornate classical poetry (Chhanda Kavya) that would later reach its highest peak through his legendary grandson, Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja. A royal scholar and patron of the arts, Dhananjaya Bhanja excelled in composing romantic, mythological, and devotional epics marked by complex metrical arrangements, intricate linguistic ornamentation, and musical rhythm. His most celebrated works include Raghunatha Vilasa (a poetic retelling of the Ramayana), along with famous romantic kavyas such as Ananga Rekha, Ichhavati, Tripura Sundari, and Madanamanjari. Blending profound devotional reverence with refined aestheticism, Dhananjaya Bhanja's literary creations remain an indispensable milestone in classical Odia heritage.
