Brajanath Badajena

Brajanath Badajena (1730–1800) was a pathbreaking 18th-century Odia poet, scholar, and pioneer of narrative prose. Born in Dhenkanal, Odisha, he served as a court poet under King Trilochan Mahendra Bahadur and stood out as a remarkably versatile genius during the late Riti Yuga era. He is immortalized for authoring Samara Taranga ("The Waves of War"), the first major historical war poem in Odia literature, which vividly documents the courageous resistance of Dhenkanal's forces against the Maratha invaders. Beyond martial poetry, Badajena was a trailblazer in prose fiction, authoring Chatura Binoda ("The Four Amusements")—a foundational work of Odia prose containing four satirical and entertaining tales (Rasa). His other major works include Ambika Bilasa, Gundicha Bije (written in a unique blend of Odia and Hindi), Bideha Gita, and Dasa Boli. His fearless realism, mastery over prose, and pioneering war poetry make his legacy an extraordinary milestone in Odia literary history.
