Aswini Kumar Ghose

Aswini Kumar Ghose (1892–1962), honorifically hailed as Natya Bharati, was a pioneering Odia dramatist, director, and father figure of modern professional Odia theatre. Born in Cuttack, Odisha, he revolutionised regional stage plays during the early to mid-20th century, bridging traditional folk performances with modern theatrical realism. Over a prolific career spanning four decades, Natya Bharati Ghose authored more than thirty play scripts across historical, mythological, and social themes. His masterwork historical dramas, such as Konarka, Kalapahada, and Govinda Vidyadhara, rekindled regional pride and historical consciousness through gripping narrative conflict and powerful dialogue. His deeply moving devotional and mythological plays, including Bhakta Salabega, Sree Lokanatha, and Sriganesha, achieved immense popular success, setting new benchmarks for professional Odia stage productions. Beyond writing, Ghose was instrumental in modernising stagecraft, set design, and production techniques in Odisha, working closely with iconic theatrical troupes such as Banamali Art Theatre and Annapurna Theatre. Through his technical innovations, dramatic craftsmanship, and dedication to vernacular stagecraft, Natya Bharati Aswini Kumar Ghose laid the foundational architecture of modern Odia commercial theatre.
