Arjuna Dasa (late 15th–early 16th century) was a seminal Odia poet widely recognized as the pioneer of written Kavya (metrical narrative poetry) in Odia literature. Living around the reign of Gajapati Prataparudra Deva, he holds an essential place in regional literary history as the crucial bridge between Sarala Dasa's Puranic tradition and the later ornate Riti period. He is most celebrated for authoring Ramabibaha ("The Marriage of Rama"), which scholars unanimously recognize as the very first formal Kavya composed in the Odia language. Written in distinct musical meters (Chhanda), Ramabibaha introduced structured canto divisions and decorative prosody to vernacular verse, laying down the foundational aesthetics for generations of Odia narrative poetry. Arjuna Dasa also composed Kalpalata, another early romantic and imaginative Kavya that highlighted the artistic evolution of Odia literature prior to the rise of the Panchasakha and Bhanja eras. Through his masterly use of indigenous ragas, vivid imagery, and refined vernacular expression, Arjuna Dasa stands as the founding architect of Odia Chhanda literature.
